Lionel Messi has been referred to the Royal Spanish Football Associations disciplinary committee fro his post penalty kick celebration in Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Racing Santander. Following his scoring of a penalty kick, Messi lifted his Barcelona jersey to reveal a t-shirt with the words “Happy birthday Mami,” written in Spanish. While he wasn’t carded for the celebration during the match, referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva, did include the action in his after match report. Messi can expect a hearing and a fine of somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 euros for the goal celebration, maybe next time he should just get her a gift.
But in all seriousness, the celebration rule is meant to prevent excessive celebration and absurd displays following a goal. Messi didn’t hold up the game, and in this case the Spanish FA should really make an exception for a one off situation that deserves clemency. Come on lads, have a heart…
