Before I begin my review of the new Puma evoSPEED 1 K cleats , I must forewarn you that I have never owned a pair of Puma cleats before. This is strange because at the moment, I am wearing one of my favorite pairs of shoes, the Puma FAAS 550’s (great shoes and extremely comfortable). Even though I have enjoyed wearing Puma shoes, all Puma cleats have been uncomfortable, ran too small, or did not feel very durable (I’m looking at you V1.11 Super Light). However, the evoSPEED is a different offering than these previous Puma cleats and should be taken into consideration when you are looking to but a new cleat.

Style

There are two versions of the new evoSPEED, a white version with red and blue and a black version with white and orange. Today, I am going to take a closer look at the black version, but the white cleat is just as nice. As you would expect, the main color throughout is black, but the color that really helps this stand out is the orange accent color. The tongue, heel, and bottom of the cleat all feature the orange color and it helps take this cleat from being dull to being very visually appealing. The upper is made of kangaroo leather, which gives a great touch on the ball as well as great comfort on your foot. Most light cleats today (this one is only 6.8 ounces) are made of synthetic materials, so it is nice to have a light cleat that still has what is considered the best leather for soccer cleats. It also has suede lining to give increased comfort. The bottom of the cleat offers a mix of bladed and rounded studs to give you great traction on the field.

Feel

Puma have created a lightweight cleat that looks great, uses kangaroo leather, and best of all, feels great. That’s pretty impressive! The softness of the kangaroo leather helps these to be very comfortable right out of the box and mold to your foot nicely. With Adizero’s and Vapor’s, you get a lightweight cleat, but you have creasing in the forefoot since it is made with synthetic materials. Since the evoSPEED is made with kangaroo leather, you don’t get this creasing, which adds to the comfort. One issue I did have with these is the fact that, like most Puma cleats, they still do run a little small. However, the evoSPEED is not nearly as bad as Puma cleats before it. I would recommend going a half size up from what you normally wear to be safe.

Overall

Before trying these cleats on, I definitely had my doubts about the evoSPEED. Luckily for everyone, Puma has come out with a top-notch cleat that everyone can enjoy. If you are a Puma fan or just love the look of the cleat and want to try your first Puma cleat, I would definitely go with these. The comfort, lightness, durability, and style go together wonderfully to give a great end product. Right now these are on sale at SoccerPro.com for $179.99 so go check them out today.
