Messi Wins Ballon d’Or Award

Lionel Messi has won the inaugural Ballon d’Or Award for player of the year for his impressive performances over the last year. The stand out performance that sealed him as the greatest player in the world last year in my mind was Barcelona’s 5-0 thrashing of Real Madrid. Throughout the game Messi played exceptionally not only as a individual, but as part of the larger team, leading to their destruction of Christiano Ronaldo’s selfish Real Madrid side. The award is somewhat controversial as many felt Xabi Alonso, the linchpin of the World Cup winning Spanish side deserved the prize more, but in the end, only the devil know how FIFA chooses these awards despite what they say. Hamit Altintop won the Puskas Award for Goal of the Year for his wonder stirke against Kazakhstan beating out soccerprose staff favorite Matty Burrows.

Brazilian striker Marta won the Women’s Player of the Year for a fifth consecutive time, and Germany’s Silvia Neid won the Women’s Coach of the Year. Marta’s women’s soccer shoes have truly been on fire this year as she has destroyed all opposition within the Us women’s professional soccer league. The league itself may be utterly awful, and lack any real support, but Marta is a bright spot i na truly dark corner of the soccer world.
